I write on a personal level as an advocate for some farm workers and community members that I interact with who have undocumented status. They are not my employees. Some work in farming, others do not. Among the major concerns/desires they have are: 1. Health insurance for general care. I have been helping to research options. What I have found from Health Navigators (Obamacare) is that anyone under the $20,000/year threshold, regardless of immigration status, is eligible for emergency medicare. Also, all children, pregnant mothers, and post-partum up to one year, regardless of immigration status can get full general health insurance. What is missing is general/preventative care for undocumented adults. The SS# seems to be the rub, even for private health insurance plans. I would like to know if there are any arrangements at all to try and get around this. Would a TIN work? Could forming an LLC work to create a group plan? 2. For undocumented people looking for employment, the I9 form is a major obstacle. That’s what it’s for I suppose. Do you know of any easy to understand documents or other organizations that might help explain how to navigate the I9? I guess I’m basically looking for loop holes, like whether the TIN can replace the SS#. It’s just sad for me to see good hard-working people not able to acquire dignified work on operations that need the labor. I understand you might not be able to comment on these issues because of the nature of the questions. However if you know of any other advocacy groups that might be able to help, please let me know. Thank you.
